For women with some medical conditions, it’s safest to give birth in hospital, where specialists are available. This is in case you need treatment during labour. Women who give birth at home or in a unit run by midwives are less likely to need assistance such as forceps or ventouse sometimes called instrumental delivery. You can change your mind at any point in your pregnancy. Your midwife will discuss the options available in your area but, if you’re willing to travel, you’re free to choose any maternity services.
Talk to your midwife about going to have a look around the local maternity services, and ask questions if you don’t understand something or think you need to know more. If you have a straightforward pregnancy, and both you and the baby are well, you might choose to give birth at home.

Shelley Russell from Dover has shared her heartbreak at losing her baby daughter Tallulah-Rai. Just a few years ago, Dover ‘s Shelley Russell was told she could not conceive naturally. She and her partner of nearly five years, Nicholas Edwards, thought they might never have a baby together. Prior to their relationship, Shelley had had two daughters, Crystal-Marie, now 14, and Charlie-Jade, 20, but Tallulah-Rai was the missing piece of the puzzle which would “make her family complete”.
However, only a month before the due date, that unbridled joy and excitement turned to panic and fear. Waking up on January 23 last year, Shelley, 39 and of Aycliffe, noticed Tallula-Rai wasn’t moving as she normally would. Shelley says that during the monitoring process the midwife left her at times in the sole care of a student nurse, who had difficulties getting a reliable reading. Even though no reliable reading could be obtained, the midwife decided to stop monitoring, sign it off noting the defective and poor-quality of the reading, and discharge mother and baby.
She had been told to come back to the hospital if there was any change but Tallulah-Rai’s movements stayed the same until the following evening. Shelley said: “At 8. A really strong movement.
